According to historian Ken Griffis, on November 22, 1941, the Pioneers signed to do a series of 15-minute radio transcriptions for the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company featuring Dick Foran (10-2-4 Ranch) and, later, Martha Mears (10-2-4 Time.) This live show was broadcast from coast to coast on the Mutual Broadcasting System, and the Pioneers had a 45-minute stage show for the studio audience directly after it.
The first Dr. Pepper show was possibly recorded on April 2, 1941, and aired on November 22, 1941, introducing Dick Foran as foreman on the 10-2-4 Ranch with the Sons of the Pioneers as his crew and Martha Mears as the owner. Although we have not found this program, we understand that Foran sang at least two solos, backed by the Sons of the Pioneers, and Martha had one or two. The first program we have access to was aired on January 8, 1943. Dick Foran and Martha Mears were featured soloists, Hugh "Foghorn" Farr, Lloyd "Shakespeare Smith" Perryman and Pat "Truthful Jones" Brady carried the comedy. Art Gilmore provided the ad for Dr. Pepper.
The last Dr. Pepper program we have access to was August 30, 1945. (The earliest program we have access to was aired on January 8, 1943.)
Foran sang traditional western melodies or those by "The Pepper Rangers" (the Sons of the Pioneers) and there was good-natured banter among the boys. Pat Brady (Truthful Jones) and Hugh (Foghorn) Farr took care of the comedy. Later programs used some of the recordings made at this time when Lloyd Perryman was still with them. When Foran left the program, Bob Nolan took his place temporarily in the script and sang the solos. These programs were still called 10-2-4 Ranch but Martha Mears was now in charge. Dr. Pepper produced a fanzine, "Pepper Rangers Gazette".
When Lloyd Perryman was called into the service Ken Carson replaced him, and the format of the programs changed to include Ken's whistled accompaniment to the Farr Brothers introduction and exit instrumentals. Ken also shared soloist honours with Martha Mears and had an increasing amount of dialogue including the comedy sections with Hugh Farr. The programs often included a Hugh Farr vocal solo.
The program name was eventually changed to 10-2-4 Time and Martha Mears remained in charge. The entrance and exit themes changed somewhat over the years.
The track list for the Dr. Pepper Shows is incomplete. There were at least 524 shows but there is also a #624 show called "Personal Album (12491)". We use the record number when we have it and the shows were sometimes numbered out of sequence. As we find more records, we will update the list.
Although the songs and instrumentals were usually recorded specifically for the 10-2-4 program, the Orthacoustic Transcriptions were occasionally used. Some of the songs recorded for the earliest 10-2-4 programs were slipped into later programs and most of these were used for the 1947-48 Teleways Transcriptions. The Teleways Transcriptions also used the 1945 introduction and exit themes.
